Chapter One It was raining gently as Mara locked her door and began a slow decent down the front steps. I guess, she thought, if it is going to rain for once, it is only right that it would do so on my last day. It hadn’t really rained in Newtown for a year, and the water made puddles on the solid hard-baked ground. Mara splashed in one for good measure when she reached the bottom of the steps.
